Catholic Educational Sharing
Mr. James O. "The
Wizard" Gettys, Jr., Assistant Professor of the School of Arts and Sciences at
Our Lady of the Lake College, wowed 5th and 6th graders with science and math
at St. Isidore Catholic School. The Wizard performed what appeared to the
children as magic tricks then explained how the tricks worked using
the principles of math and science. The children were astonished when their
classmate and teacher were not "egged" after having a plastic pie tin,
toilet paper tolls, and eggs thrown at them. The eggs actually fell into
beakers of water! One student held a vase steady while The Wizard whisked
a wooden ring away allowing a small wooden ball to fall right into the vase.
All of the students were able to experience balance and counter balance as
they balanced rulers, eagles, and trolls in the flat palm of their hands. Two
girls even help the ends of a rod while balancing a toy motorcycle! Our "girliest
of girls" was astonished when she shook a sealed jar of white beans while
thinking "girlie" thoughts, and three pink balls appeared laying atop the
beans! Our most patriotic boy was able to produce red, white, and blue
balls! The children were absolutely flabbergasted when The Wizard guessed a
number from a set of magic cards and then explained the theory of base two.
The big question at the end of the demonstration was "who had more fun, the
teachers, students, or The Wizard?" Returning to the classrooms, the
children were able to apply some the principles they learned to their current
lesson in science. It was a great learning experience.
What my Catholic Education means to me....... By: Sarah Moore Even though I have only been in a Catholic School for two years, I have come to realize that I am very lucky. St. Isidore is a place where not only do we come to learn our academics, but we can attend Mass and we can pray. At first I didn't want to come to St. Isidore because I was scared I would not make any friends. To my surprise everyone was very kind! I have made many friends, and now I am glad to be here. Attending St. Isidore has given me a wonderful chance to learn about the Catholic religion. I have learned that the Catholic Church is very involved with this school. I hope that everyone can see that Catholic Schools are wonderful places. I am very happy to be attending St. Isidore Catholic School.
By: Travor Drago My Catholic Education means that I can worship the one true God without pressure. I am glad that at school we learn so much about God, Jesus, and the Saints. I'm so thankful that we can pray at our school. Learning about the Christians that lived before us teaches us about the things they heard and saw. That is good information. We also learn about the gospels and who wrote them, and that makes religion class interesting. My Catholic Education was the best thing that ever happened to me. I am lucky to be attending St. Isidore Catholic School where learning is so important and is something I look forward to everyday. I think our school is truly blessed and that is what my Catholic education means to me.
By: Hannah Hood I have been in a Catholic School since Pre-K and have been a student at St. Isidore since Kindergarten. I have made many friends along the way but I have made one special friend who will be with me forever-that friend is Jesus. Through the years Jesus has guided me on a path to a great education. Being in a Catholic School, we have the privilege of attending Religion class everyday where we learn about Jesus, Mary, the disciples, and the apostles. We attend Mass every Friday or Holy Day of Obligation. The teachers help us grow in faith by praying before each class. They teach us how to be the best person that God made us to be. I am glad my parents chose to send me to St. Isidore Catholic School. It has molded me into the person I am today.
